3020 engine racing

For the last couple of months when I would start my diesel 3020 the engine would start to race until I tap the throttle then it would quit. The last few days 2 or 3 times it has started to race while using it. Tap the throttle and it drops back to normal. I am afraid this is bad news. This is my main chore tractor this time of year. I am afraid this means pump overhaul which means downtime. Thanks for any help, comments, or suggestions. Lee

Injection pump needs repair, PRONTO! Weight retainer is coming apart, and on vertical mount pumps like you have the retainer will drop down enough the pins can come out of the plate drive slots. Increasing the governor spring pressure pushes the weight assembly back up . Will work awhile UNTIL the pins shear off. Last 4020 pump in for repair had the same trouble.

Listen to what these guys are saying. My 4020 had the exact same symptoms last summer. Time for a pump re-build. My local JD dealer gave me two options: send the pump out for a rebuild, or a remanufactured JD pump with a warranty. I took the JD pump because it wasn't much more money, and the turn around time was much quicker.

As others stated you need to get IP repaired before a connecting rod puts a hole in your engine block. 3020 engine blocks are almost as scarce as hen's teeth.

I had a fellow's 4020 in the shop a few years back for some minor repairs. Nothing big...stuff like new battery boxes and batteries..new seat cushions...fix some small leaks and that sort of thing.

I was driving the 4020 around the shop after I was done with it and it tried to runaway!! The injection pump got a rebuild then.

I asked the owner about it trying to runaway and over-revving...he said it had been fine until I had it in my shop!!

Thanks for the help fellas. That is what I was afraid of. Can anyone recommend a good place to get it done ? I pulled this one off and had it rebuilt by a pump shop in Knoxville a few years ago. When I got it back and put it on the throttle rod wouldn't reach. I called the shop to see if they might have put the L shaped bracket on wrong. I talked to the guy that did the rebuild and he assured me that he had not even taken that bracket off. I then called a guy in Crossville that is extremely knowledgeable on the 20 series to see if the bracket could be put on more than one way. It could so I had to pull the pump, bolt the bracket in the correct position and in effect do the job twice. I don't plan on using this shop again so I need to find one I can trust. What makes things worse is it is my main hay feeding tractor and it will put me in a bind if its down long. Thanks again,Lee

It sounds like your friend in Crossville might be able to recommend a good local shop.
