Helping a friend with a 1950 B. Starts and runs but smokes like crazy. Oil comes out of pet cocks. Oil smoke comes out of muffler. Don't know history of the work done on tractor, manifold was replaced and bolts were used not studs. Oil pressure gauge is showing HIGH! Any suggestions besides bad rings. Where is all the oil coming from? Oil level in air cleaner and crankcase is correct.

Also could have been seized up from sitting outside and getting water in the jugs. Folks will try and "break" them loose and hope for the best, most often without favorable results. In other words... she could be completely shot or you may just have some stuck rings. Pull the head and have a look.
Just went through this with a little AC C and it didn't come out well.

Before you do a single other thing, you should top her off and put her to some hard work. After half a day of that you'll see the real deal and not before. This will be your cheapest means to find out how good or how bad this engine really is. Unless you are made of money, have plenty to throw away, just don't really care about the cost and want to overhaul it in the first place, in which case never mind.

depending on what your friend wants to do with the tractor, and how much is he looking to spend on it. sounds like the tractor needs an overhaul from top to bottom, if it is going to cost to much for your friend , then maybe think about getting another tractor and use yours for parts , or just part your tractor out.

If it has a tube coming from the governor
that runs beside the fanshaft, it has a
ventilator pump. I have heard of those
failing and actually pushing oil into the
breather elbow at the carburetor. More
likely it's worn slap out tho.

If you can find someone with a borescope, you can do a lot of diagnostics before going to a lot of work.

OH, come ON fellas.... Tell him to Remove the Air-Cleaner Cup and see if the smoking clears up...

If it does (and it well might), tell him to run a flexible Garden hose up the inside Air-Cleaner tube and flush the Mud Dauber nests out until the water runs clear..

Tell him, while he is at it Grease the front Fan Support Bearing..

I have BEEN down that road..chasing the cause..even removed the Governors before I found the problem..

Great Idea:..slip a piece of one leg of an old pair of panty Hose over the inlet stack...(you certainly have an extra pair laying around..???)..!

Keeps the wasps/Daubers out while not in use...

(reply to post at 03:02:00 01/30/18) [f/quote] Found out today someone put diesel fuel in this thing. Put real gasoline in it and it is fixed. Runs great, no smoke. Fooled me. Next time will put my nose in the fuel tank!!!!!!!!!!

Been an HVAC service tech for 35+ years and rule one has always been check the simple stuff first, even if it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the issue. Saved a lot of effort that that way instead of tearing into things first. Years and years ago the BIL was working on his girlfriend's (now wife) car. Gas gauge wasn't working so he spent the afternoon draining, dropping the tank and replaced the sending unit. Still didn't work when he put it back together. Asked me if I had any ideas. Still laugh at the look on his face when it was just a bad fuse.
