435 GM DIESEL?

What are the pros and cons of these little tractors, also the value in very good shape?

Not a bad little tractor but even with an engine heater on them it's almost impossible to get them started in the winter. They don't start terrific when it's 60 degrees, have to use starting fluid sometimes at that temp.

With the right injectors and pistons they will start much better. The 3 point hitch leaks more than any detroit engine I have ever had.

I did get a good picture of mine backed up to the Big Bud at Penfield when it was there. I told Williams that I was trying to see if I could pull the drawbar pin out with the 435. I had the hydraulic reservoir full for a little while then.

Money wise what would a nice one bring, rebuilt
engine new rubber and paint and starts easy?

Rebuilt to what degree? New rings, new bearings, valve grind and gaskets? Or a proper rebuild ?
Options such as float ride seat, HD three rib fenders, power steering, live pto, SCV, dual rockshaft and swept back front axle all make a difference.
Now that the bottom has dropped out of the market, maybe $4500-$6000 at best. 20 years ago $12,000 was not unheard of.

He has receipts of 6,600 he's spent on it but I
haven't looked at the tractor yet only pics and it is
sharp, said the lift is leaking somewhere maybe the
rock shaft but I will check it out soon

The value has really dropped in the last ten years or so. They share many common parts with the earlier Dubuque tractors. The engine and bell housing are the main differences. You are not telling us what your wanting to do with it. They are a neat collector tractor but I would not really want one for daily use. The Detroit motor parts are easy to find. Some of the JD/Detroit stuff is not. An example would be the power steering pump drive pulley. It was a JD only item and has not been available for over 20 years from JD.

You also need to make sure where the one your thinking about was made. The US market has had a lot of them shipped up from Mexico and that has negatively effected the value. Just because they are not as rare as people once thought they where. I see restored ones selling in the $6500-8500 range commonly now. 20 years ago $12-15K was not unheard of for them.

Make sure the 435 has the oval muffler from the John Deere parts counter. The regular round phart can muffler will cause permanent hearing damage.

Well to some ( me ) the Detroit is a con and to others it is a pro ! All in what you like. I just like the regular ole JD 2 cyl. sound.
The price you mentioned below seems to be reasonable in today's market. Make sure the hood nose cone is in good shape as they only fit that model from what I understand. It is also made from aluminum.
