1947 John Deere A fanshaft question

I am rebuilding the fan shaft on a 1946 John Deere A. The splines were unserviceable, so I bought a new fan shaft. When removing the old pinion from the old shaft, there was about a 1/4 inch gap between the shaft shoulder, and the bearing cone. This shaft has obviously been rebuilt before, so I just wanted to make sure. Also, the old fan shaft did not have a snap ring on it. Anything special about these pinion snap rings?

Nothing out of the ordinary that I can recall, no special retention methods - nothing. I'm having a difficult time understanding how yours got into the shape described though. Maybe the snap ring was thought to be on when it really wasn't in the first place and something that simple lead to this many years later?

The bearing race should be seated against the shoulder on the fan shaft. For the cost of a snap ring, just get one and do it right.

Better get a couple snap rings, they aren't the best quality, and it doesn't take much and they are sprung. So don't over spread them when going together.
