Has anyone ever had a tractor with low compression from sitting for years and wouldn't start with starter but would start when you pull it?

Does it have a magneto? Guy brought a tractor for me to look at and I had the mag rebuilt and started just fine after that. Had weak spark/impulse spring, pulling the tractor speeds up the engine and makes the mag work better when weak.

Shore have. Fellow I worked for 20 years or so ago picked up 36 B on steel with cultivators on it. It would only start by pulling but finally ran it enough could start by hand.

Its a 730 gas had a real mechanic come buy today everything is right on tractor, time, value gap, but very little compression, as soon as it warms up he said pull it and let it run. And probably would start with starter later on. Hopefully this week in. I sure hope so. I been working on it for awhile. Tractor had sit for years.

The rings are likely stuck in the grooves. A little atf in the plug holes and turn it over a few times and let it sit for a few days may help it.

Not really low compression either but My LA doesn't like to start from a long rest. The gas doesn't get sucked up into the cylinders.
Had a hand start styled B when I bought it fellow told me it will not start by hand but you can coast it a few feet or tow it and starts right up. I bought it. It was too nice to part out and ran great once running. I never messed with it much, but sure enough it would not start by hand ! I parked it on the hill out front FOR SALE and resold it in a short time. I gave the same not starting speech to the then to be new owner too. I could coast it down that hill and it would start within the length of the tractor.
I also had an unstyled B I bought not running. Didn't take much to get it going but that engine had to be shot ! It would blow oil droplets all over. But yet it was one of the best starting tractors I have had ! Go figure ?

Yes. On a gas burner it's not only the compression it's voltage drop while cranking you have to worry about. Pulling or rolling will fire one up faster. I've also seen plenty of 4020 diesel dairy tractors so worn out they would do that after sitting only a week or two at the shop.

Thank you as soon as wheather permits I will pull it, I put some atf in cylinders and turned it over now letting it sit. Thank you to everyone.

If you have another tractor with a belt pulley and a belt this works even better than a chain starter as you can "mess" with it while it is cranking over.

If that is one of those old horizontal cylinder tractors like the A and B you need to either jack up the front end about 3 foot or fill the cylinders with ATF or you will be wasting your time since the ATF has to go around the whole piston or it will not help. I also pour ATF down the exhaust so it gets to the valves to help free them up also. Have an Oliver 60 engine that was super low on compression and I fill the cylinders and let it sit a few days and the compression came up where it should have been. Also always put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc. out. After it has sat a few days pull the plugs and spin it over to clear the ATF out

730 gas is kinda a keeper and sought after. best to give it some hard work in a field for a day with 2 cycle oil in the gas. cover the rad as necessary to keep it running at operating temp or a bit warmer at times. check the compression now and after the work out. these old gas tractors that putt putt around the yard get carboned up.just running it wont do much, it needs a good load for some hrs. to get the rings free. they are a nice tractor.
