Can't believe nobody answered my first post! I need help replacing the bearings in a front spindle on a 420. I am just sure there are some tricks to doing it. Got the parts but no instruction about how it all comes apart.

HELP!

Bill

If they are needle bearings use a piece of threaded rod and washers or a socket to pull the bearing into place.Don't pound them in.

M-Man, sounds like you have done this. I am hoping just the bearings are worn out, what if we discover the races are worn too? What are the odds of that? And how do we tell? I figured the shaft in the spindle would just fall out when we took the tie rod off, is that what to expect or might it take a little tapping?

Sounds as if you pull the needle bearings up into the spindle, is there anything in the service manual that shows/explains that procedure? I have included my e-mail, if you have some pictures please send.

Thanks,

Bill

There aren't any races. Needle bearings are pressed into the tube and ride on the spindle shaft. If the shaft is worn bad you'll see it. Service manual say's to use special tool to replace bearings with no illustrations. It is simply a driver that fit's in the bearing and is a few thousandth's smaller on the outside. Universal needle bearing/bushing sets are available but in my opinion are too short. I have a lathe and make my own because i want the tool to completely fill the bearing. That eliminates distortion while installing. I have used the threaded rod and washers to install needle bearings. Do make sure there are no nicks in the bore from removal and apply pressure only to the side on the needle bearing that has the numbers. The end with the numbers is strengthened on needle bearings so they can be driven in without damage. Do make sure it starts straight!

Pay close attention to the washers and thrusts locations as you disassemble it. The parts book will show the order also. Those will probably be where most of your wear is.
