Our 01 JD 4600 has a little over a 1000 hours on it now, and I intent to check the valve clearance, it's a Yanmar 4 cylinder diesel. does anyone have any advice on doing this, is it necessary? I have the specifications and I have worked on many different types of engines. I will worry about it until I get it done, should be simple compared to my Triumph motorcycle!

I will 3rd Tim S and David G in that with only 1000 hours your no where near needing to adjust the valves.

Yes,, a lot of times I see some one that don't understand that the engine needs clocked and the right sequence needs followed to adjust the valves,,and they end up making things worse,,

What's the manual say as to hours to do it ? Follow it.

Our JD750 compact said every 500 hours. At the first 500 I got a lot on the adjustments. Then after several times I checked them they stayed fine. so it had an initial wear in and then it was fine.
Have the injectors tested too at that time. At least that's what my manual says. I'd follow your manual.
