Here is a link to a craigslist ad in Michigan. Don't know anything about it, but seems price is good if it is usable.
Tom, what do you think? Its all yours if you want it.

It is a late 3020 Diesel block,,and it is priced way too cheap,,If it's a good one it would be worth the drive,,The one I am getting is a 1966 model,,and I won't get it till the weather breaks,,when I do get it I will be inspecting it to determine it's value,, my thoughts are a good Bare block would be in the $1,000 range,,especially a late block...

Is the 3020 block a weak spot on the tractor ? eBay has cranckshafts and you can get a rebuild kit anywhere

Many have the balancer blow-up and do bad things.
Balancer ears broken + Side crankshaft inspection windows are common.

The crankshaft on the 3020 does not hold up as good as 4020s.
I saw this, I don't know if it can hold up, after seeing the repair rate of 3020s.

I have been running a home made turbo kit on a 72 3020 for about 10 years now,,it seems to be dealing with it okay,,the thing about 3020 blocks is they only made them for 3020/3010's,,a bit of differences in the latter ones but they all interchange,,and they are hard to find,,very hard to find,if you are unlucky enough to throw a rod out the side of one,,,, that is one of the reasons I am dealing for the one I came across... they are not prone to explode..but it can happen..I know of a couple that got parted out because they couldn't find a block..

There was a Dubuque style replacement engine sold by Deere for the 3020 around 1990. I wonder how many Deere built and if they are harder to find than the Holy Grail.

Several blocks on eBay now

I have not seen one from Deere,,a guy in Indiana was doing some kind of a conversion with them...

It is cheap if ok. I have to many projects right now and I hate traveling thru Chicago to get it but that price does make me think. Tom

It wasn't made by Deere, but by Superior Diesel, a Deere engine distributor based in Rhinelander, WI. They had a kit to put a 414 or similar in a 4020 as well.

That block is awefully cheap, from the picture it looks like the #1 main cap is not there.

The Ebay link has pictures of a 300 series block, not the 3020 engine.

I don’t think Deere made the kit to put the Dubuque, I found advertisements for repower kits, I believe a dealer in Wisconsin put them together with new 3.9 or 4.5L engines.

I did one a while back with a 239, I acquired a 276 that’s looking for a home, wish I could find a side console 3020 with a bad engine, gas or diesel, I don’t care.

Do you have a picture of your turbo kit?
I would like to make a 3620 with 4620 shortened aftercooler someday.

Ditto I agree with Tim. Block in Ebay ad would require a special flywheel housing to mount in a 3020. Block is for industrial or utility tractor that utilizes Mannheim or Saran engine blocks with a screw on oil filter. I think Ebay block is a 4276 not 4270.

Jim,
I wouldn’t call it special, just different, a 4030 bellhousing adapter will allow you to bolt any 300 series block onto a 400 series bolt pattern (3010, 3020, 4010, 4020, etc......)
John Deere made the 3420 in Argentina with the 303 6 cylinder, I have not had any luck finding a parts book to see what the part/casting number for the adapter is.

Mike
What ever word you choose to describe the flywheel housing is fine with me BUT I'm going to guess attaching a 300 series engine to a 3020/4020 isn't as as simple as utilizing a 4030 flywheel housing(R51794). Why did 4030 utilize a clutch housing(AR65206) that was designed only for a 4030? I think flywheel housing(T25115) utilized on a 2510/2520 plus several other machines would be much easier to locate BUT I have no idea if it will bolt up to a 3020/4020 clutch housing. I find it unique that 2510 & 2520 with SR trans didn't share the same clutch housing[/url]

Tx Jim,
The 2510 and 2520 have different clutch housings due to the change in dahsboard support from the GN1 to Gen2. 3020 and 4020 just had the same change.

2510 and 2520 are the only Waterloo tractor that are using a Dubuque bolt pattern on the clutch housing. A 300 series motor from an utility tractor (2020-2755) has same backing plate bolt pattern than 2520 one and should bolt right on to the 2510-20 clutch housing. On those tractors the engine back plate is totally enclosing the clutch housing.

2420-3420-4420-4030-4040 EU-4040S are using the Waterloo bell housing. The back plate on those tractors does not extend all the way to the bottom of the transmission case. The only cast iron 4 cylinders oil pan that would work when you use a 4030 engine plate on a 3020 is a 2420 one, and those are only in Argentina. Other solution is to use a steel oil pan from 2020 and make a steel plate to close the flywheel housing. This would not be as strong.

4030 has a specific clutch housing because it is the only 30 series tractor with the 3020 size transmission, so a 4230 clutch housing could not work due to interface with transmission case.

The bolt up issue is the easy part..dealing with the front side frame bolts,,clutch, and clutch control will be a bit of a problem,,I have given it a thought a few times..but never thought it was worth the trouble..
