JD 70 - PTO problems

I have a 1956 Model 70 with a broken? transmission driven PTO. My service manual only covers engine drive PTO's w/ independent clutch. Does anyone have service info on the transmission driven style & could forward me the page copies? The PTO doesn't engage with the lever and I detect no turning resistance w/ the tractor clutch engaged, totally free wheeling. From looking at the parts book, the only access is from the rear or by removing the gear shift cover, right? Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

The information on the pto should be included with the transmission in the service manual.
That's where it is in the 50 manual.

Thanks, I found the section. Do you know if you can see anything significant related to the PTO engagement by removing the gear shift cover?

sounds like it's not a live pto probably has a broken coupler, have to take the rear end off including rock shaft comes off with it, not a big deal but takes time.

well I was cutting stalks with my bush hog on the back one day and I popped the clutch and the pto made a big boom and stopped working, went to shop took the rear end off and the coupler was lying the broken into, I put another one on and put it back together and has worked fine ever since.

Not really going to be able to see the PTO coupling from under the gear shift cover. Just drain the gear oil and remove the entire lift section off the back. If you have a engine hoist it is pretty simple to do.

Thanks all. I'll pull the back off and look for the issue. I need the pto because part of the justification I gave to my wife for buying this project was to have a tractor to hook to our irrigation pump. Hate to disappoint her. Any ideas on my oil in water problem?

Take the back cover off and check the shiftier arm it sounds like it is no moving the the gear in . the gear is inside thr first Reduction cover
