model LA belt pulley

When mounting a belt pulley on a john deere model la, I was wondering in what position the "square" hole goes? Does it go in the 12, 3, 6, or 9 o'clock position? I have attached a picture.

I should also point out that there is a round hole as well that is 180 degrees away from the square hole.

I don't know, let's see what someone else has to say, but I'm guessing the square "funnel" shaped hole is to go at the top to collect oil for the bearings, and the round, probably "drain" hole is supposed to go on the bottom.

My tractor did not come with a pulley as I bought it separately. After using a tape measure, the holes are indeed indexed (difference is ~1/8" which is why I didn't notice it with the naked eye). So the square hole has to go either in the 12 or 6 o'clock position. I assume it will go at the 12 position to collect oil as was indicated. Thanks for all the help.

So remember that when you fill up the housing that attaches to, oil is only in the very bottom of the square mounting hole, and not a ton at that. The gear should ride in the oil, bring it up top, deposit in the flanged square hole and lubricate the bearings returning back to that sump type area through the round hole. Square hole goes up is how I installed mine. Remember to make sure oil can pass through the assembly. When I got mine it was plugged and that is why I figured it had a bad bearing. Also, I put thread sealer on the bottom two bolts when reinstalling. These two bolts have oil behind them and I didn't want them to leak.

I can't remember if the original owners manual had a reference to position them or not ? Maybe I can try and remember to find mine and look it up. My first thought was it may only line up to the bolt holes one way ? I do remember removing mine as with it installed it made a knocking sound even with the gears meshed pretty good. There are shims/shim gaskets go on there adjust how tight the gears mesh.

I looked in the owners manual and it did not mention about what way it goes on. It did say how fast of belt speed it had and to adjust mesh with shims and that it could make a sound like an engine knock.

What did the book say was the belt speed. Also what is an easy way to remove the the leather pulley from the keyed shaft? I don't think a gear puller would work. Is using a hammer on the back side the best option?

I don't remember the exact figure but it was something like 3,100 fpm. If I go back to the shop I'll write it down.
I don't think I have ever had to take one apart. Are there any threaded holes in the center hub one could hook an all thread puller into ?
