4640 Steering

I went by my partners place yesterday to look at his 4640 with him. His steering is hard when he is raising his loader. Pressure checked ok and he said fluid, filter, and sump screen had been changed and checked recently. I cleaned one of the screens in the steering valve but could not get lines loose at the time to check filters or screens under the elbow fittings. I did take both caps off of valve and spool was very tight in housing. Is this normal and what do you all think? Thanks!

Have you checked the hydraulic supply pressure AT THE STEERING VALVE when it is steering easy, then watched it as the loader valve was operated, making it steer HARD?

Does it make a difference if the loader is being raised empty, or with a heavy load?

How does it steer while the loader is being LOWERED?

There is a check valve in the metering pump at the base of the steering wheel that goes bad and lets charge oil back into the pump,,it will cause hard steering... and the spool valve should also move easy in the bore,,could be a separate issue..

i actually had to knock spool valve out with a hammer and punch. Had to tap pretty good. I don't guess I damaged anything. I put it back in and was still snug but didn't know if it should be that tight or not. I know the one I had on a 4430 was a lot looser. Seemed the same after I put it back in. No, I have not checked any pressure at valve while steering is hard and not sure where I would check it. No load on loader while raising, but didn't notice it being hard while lowering.

The little metering pump under the steer wheel has to push that valve left or right to make the steer happen,,if it moves hard it will need more pressure on the steer wheel to pump pressure to move the spool valve and if you sand it a bit it will leak past the spool and not work well ether,,those steering "Bricks" come as a matched set (spool and body),,they are pricey,,about $900...
