Looking at a 5010 it has a 5020 engine in..it was installed over 40 years ago by a jd dealer..Will
this hurt resale from a collectors point of view?

A true collector would probably want an original engine
but I don't know if it would hurt the value.

The 5020 engine makes it a better tractor. I guess if a collector is looking for an original 5010 to round out his NG collection it might hurt the value. I?d say about 90% of the 5010s around here had their engine replaced with a 5020 engine. After the 5020s came out JD had some sort of a program to update 5010s to 5020s. I?ve personally have only seen one 5010 with its original engine still intact.

HP for one thing. Depending on the year of the 5020 the difference is between 12 and 20 hp. Another big difference is the 12 qt oil pan on the 5010 vs the 20 qt on the 5020. The small oil pan contributed to some 5010 engine deficiency's according to a few old JD mechanics around here.

If I was to overhaul our 5020 today that is what engine I would use. Basically a poor man's 6030. We also have a 5010 with a 5020 engine but it does feel different from the 5020.

The only engine change deal i ever heard of was a replacement deal to replace the 404 in the 4520 the new engine had the diesel pump moved up to the front and drove off the cam gear there was new air clearer set up and some other improvements frist offered at $1800.00 as i recall and there was a deadline to this offer
