JD 70 Cam Gear Removal?

I have a cam gear on a JD 70 that has a whole bunch of broken teeth. I have the tractor all ripped down to where the cam is loose from side to side. How do i get the cam bearing off the end of the cam so i can get the gear off?

Is there some kind of special bearing puller that will remove the bearing thru the case?

I do not want to have to remove or will i remove the crank to get the cam gear off.

I will take some picture tonight so show where i am at in the process.

Try a thin chisel and see if it will move. You might need to add some heat to it also. To get the cam out I believe you need to pull the crank on the 70's but you will still need to remove the gear first.

I have removed A and 60 cam brgs. from the left side with a K-D power steering/alt. brg. puller for autos. You have to cut the cage off and remove the rollers. This K-D puller has 2 half sleeves and are the right size to fit over the lip on the cam brg. and pull them. Not sure if a 70 is the same size brg.
Have you figured out why the teeth got busted off ? This would be of concern so as not to happen again.

I was hoping to remove the bearing without destroying it. ouch.
I will look into that puller.

The teeth are missing because the governor shaft broke while the tractor was running.

The IT manual sez you can lower the crank to make room to remove the gear. Needless to say it says a bunch of other stuff that has to be moved/removed. I'd sure read over the procedure from at least the IT
if not the JD service manual as it sounds like a bear. Not at all like the lettered or other numbered engines. Good luck and a happy new year to you, I hope!

OUCH ! Those are all strange failures. Wonder why the gov. shaft broke ? I've seen a lot of torn up gov. bevel gears and bearings but the shafts are usually fine ?
Does your tractor also have power steering ? if so wonder if something is causing an extra load up there ?

As you can see there is not a lot of room to work but someone must have removed one of these before. People that part out tractors?

I do have an IT manual and a parts manual but it just tells you to remove the bearing now how or with what. Some times that IT manual is pretty vague on what to do.

OK i am obviously not smart enough how to post pictures on this site.

I am not sure they the governor shaft broke either. The tractor was sitting idling when it happened. I was just walked from one shed back to the tractor heard a slight clunk and the tractor shut off like you turned off the switch.

Forget the IT manual. What does the real JD manual state that has to be done ?

I do not have one. But if you do and you are willing to share that would be great.

I wouldn't worry about saving that bearing because of the rust and probably pitted . Remove the reduction cover and that should let the cam move to the side enough to let you turn and remove it . I haven't done one in 40 years. the bearing will come off when you press the gear .

Well i got the Cam bearing off. My neighbor had an interesting set of pullers that we got it moving with and once it was moving it came off fairly easy.

HOWEVER.....

I still can't move the cam over far enough to the clutch side of the tractor to get the dang gear off.

When i put my hand up into the case i can feel a finger width of space between the cam lobe and some cast piece i can not see however i can not get the cam over to touch that cast piece. If i could move it over just that much further I am sure i could get the gear off the cam shaft.

I was so frustrated last night i almost put the wheel back on and rolled the thing outside.
