French Hecht wheel weights for spoked unstyled B

Can someone with first hand knowledge of this subject please explain to me which F&H wheel weight is the "inner" weight for a 36 inch 20 spoke F&H wheel on an '37 unstyled JD Model B? And also, what number is the appropriate "outer" weight? The number 162 has a smaller ID opening than the number 161G. Trying to locate just the inner weights right now. Confused...

amtrac, here's an old response from the late Duane Larson that discusses a little about F&H weights:

JD apparently used both F&H weights and JD weights. I have not been able to determine yet if their use overlapped. From pictures it appears they started with the F&H weights, but FSB 103 (11/39) discusses a weight simplification program using the D2628R weight, which I assume is the JD weight. Both weights used the concept of "inner" and "outer" weights - the "inner" weight was adjacent to the wheel (not on the inside of the wheel), and the "outer" weight attached to the outside of the inner weight when multiple weights were required. I think the main difference is the inner weight had to accommodate the hub size, while the outer weight was outside the hub so the hole diameter was not critical.

The F&H inner weights were identified by castings F&H and W161 or W161G. The W161G had a larger center hole to accommodate larger hubs, and I presently think they were used on HC391 hubs on the 12 spline A, and the round spoke Gs. The W161 were used on all other F&H wheels for JD as well as other brands, except the JD H and L series as they used different wheels. The W162 weight was used as the "outer" 2nd (and 3rd) weight.
The JD inner weights were identified by casting # D2628R, and could be attached to (flat and round) spoke, cast, and pressed steel rear wheels by use of three different bolt kits. The outer weight was part number AD984R. I'm not sure if that is both part and casting number or not as I have not seen any of them.

It presently appears to me that the JD weights would fit all types of wheels, while the F&H weights were designed to fit the F&H wheels (but they may have worked on JD flat spoke wheels, for example). Some more research is required here to sharpen this up.

I know this sounds backwards but the 162 weight will go on first and the recess on the inside fits on the lip of the center hub of the spoke wheels. The 161 will set on the lip of the 162 weight as you stack them. This combination works on my GP and a couple of red tractors I own with F&H wheels on them.

This is one way I have seen them before: the 162 is the inner weight and the 161 or 162G is the outside weight. However, this seems to be in conflict with what Duane Larson's research concluded. I have seen other F&H wheels with the 161 bolted on first, so I am still not sure which is correct. Guess I had better measure my hubs and measure the inside recess on the weights. Thanks for your input.
