4020 engine overhaul

I am not needing an overhaul just yet, but I know the time will come. If the complete major kit can be bought for $1500--1700, then can someone tell me why it usually costs more like $4000-$6000 by the time it is all done? What is a rough breakdown of the other costs besides the kit?

The Reliance kit is about $1200,,getting the new wrist pin bushings and rods resized, plus machine work on the head (guides valves, springs and planing) will cost around $1200,,Injector and pump work about $900, water pump/engine oil pump ?? in frame/out of frame ??..clutch replace if it's out of frame...about $1600 labor at my shop...thats about where you end up,,of course you could skip some of these things ,,but it would reflect in the over all performance and longevity of the job. If you sent it to a dealer shop this price would near double...

Best to do it right and it will last along time! I know of 2 newer JD tractors that were out of warranty that cost over $40K to redo.

I usually replace worn cam and new valves instead of ground.
Usually need seats and guides.

Yes,, most have been O/H'ed a few times already and chances are good that they were done quick and cheap,,so to be sure every thing should be changed out and made right.

I Saw a sign in a shop that said:
We do three types of jobs,,Cheap Quick and Good
You can have any two.
A Good Quick Job - Won't be Cheap
A Good Job Cheap -Won't be Quick
A Cheap Job Quick - Won't be good

Machine work and new injectors new oil pump re sizing rods have the crank polished or re sized new cam shaft rebuild or new injection pump it adds up quick the engine kit is the cheap part

Ooh yes a worn cam/oil pump gear will make the injection pump timing float around,,will really show up full throtle in road gear more for some reason...

Wear and tear is one thing but a $300K tractor with 1200 hours shouldn't need an overhaul or new transmission.4020 s had a good record but some of them failed also.It costs about the same as they cost new if done at JD with $100+ labor. One thing if done right you will have a good tractor that will run quite a while.

Another thing that I add to an engine O/H is new hardware,,completely,,pan bolts ,valve cover manifolds front cover,,and of course head bolts,,some of these old Gals have been O/H'ed several times in the past and every time a bolt is re-torqued it will stretch a bit,and the heads round a bit,,it all makes for a clean longer lasting job..

Costs to O/H our '72 4020 this spring were close to $7K CAD.

$2400 - Reliance high compression O/H kit
$660 - New Stanadyne injectors
$1100 - Machine shop costs(cyl. head reconditioning & small end bushing replacement / re-sizing)
$2500 - [b:c261839941][u:c261839941]Misc.[/u:c261839941]
[/b:c261839941]

The miscellaneous costs are a combination of the unexpected wear items found during disassembly & of the small items required in a quality O/H:

Water pump overhaul
Thermostat replacement(resurfacing of housings due to possible warping)
Oil cooler testing or replacement
Radiator cleaning / testing or replacement
Radiator hose/s replacement
Heater hose/s replacement
Intake hose/s replacement
Block heater & cord replacement
Unexpected items: push rods & lash adjusters worn due to migrated rocker shaft end plug, oil pump pick up screen loose, oil cooler & heater hose steel piping corroded
Items replaced due to age & importance of operation: Coolant temp. gauge & low oil press. light switch

Note that the above is only parts & machine shop costs as I did the work myself. You could plan on close to similar costs for labor($6 - $7K).

USD will obviously be significantly less, situations vary, & there are cheaper routes to take than what I've posted but most with experience will point out that taking the cheap road usually doesn't pay.

All it takes is a groggy operator & a "ratty" radiator hose that blows / fails under full load to cause a major overheat condition, negating a fresh overhaul.

FWIW

Agreed 100%

A shut down, or audible warning at the very least, for low eng. oil pressure, high coolant temperature, & low coolant level would be ideal.

We should consider Murphy Switches with a greater degree of importance.
