1967 4020 powershift broken parking pawl noise?

Hey guys i have a 1967 4020 powershift, my father n law was loading it on a trailer and heard a loud pop when he took it out of park. the forward and reverse gears still work as normal but now i have no park, the tractor still creeps unless i set the loader down or something. I have been through the linkage with a fine tooth comb and it is functioning as it should. i am thinking the parking pawl popped off the shaft. I can get by without that for what i am using the tractor for. (not worth splitting IMO) however, ever since i occasionally hear a grinding or a sound like a piece of metal is bouncing around in my transmission gears. is it possible its that chunk of parking pawl? if so can that be removed through the floor cover maybe? i just assumed it would hit bottom and i wouldn't have to worry about it. Thanks for the help!

I worked on one of those that had the complete pawl broken off. Was able to get it replaced without a split ,but may of been faster to split it ? Good chance you have some left over pieces floating around in there ? or maybe it is in one part but something else is not letting it operate ?
I'm not a big fan of how those lock into park ! one direction they get forced tighter and the other it is trying to force them out so sometimes they don't lock. Also if they stick locked on a hill it can be hard to get them unlocked.

If you think these are bad you should check out a 7010 series with 19 speed power shift,, the trans case is only 3/8" thick in the pawl area,, I changed 2 cases last year because the side of the case blew out..If any one with one of these wants to know more I will open another thread. It is a serous flaw..

would I be able to at least pull the broken piece out pretty easily with out splitting it? does it hurt it to use it with out that pawl? obviously I guess I would need to drain fluids before attempting to recover that broken piece?

You can see what is happening when you lift the top cover off,,my guess is the roller #5 has came loose from arm #7,,and possibly the spring #9 has broken or came loose too,, there were 2 different styles on the roller pin as you can see in the picture the snap ring #1 is a common failure,, and it is difficult to deal with,,but it can be done.

No they are exactly the same,,one of the causes for failure is slamming into park on the roll..the other is the linkage in the shifter console (plastic) gets worn here and there so when you go back through the shift to get to park, the switch stays in first,,your in park now and let the clutch out thinking all is well and it puts power to the pawl and blows the side of the case out..so if you are unfortunate to own one of these let the clutch out "before" you put in into the park stall..and if your looking at buying one "don't" this goes the same for all 10 series 19 speed power shifts.

As Tim said the roller might be off.
The pawl can/will jump over against
the gear causing noise.
I have fished them out with a magnet.
The pieces usually fall into the loadshaft
cavity so won't get picked up.

Tim, had a friend who had a 7800 do something similar, only it was only a crack. If memory serves, that case was aluminum? Anyway, the Deere dealer did it... and it was a lot more than the price you quoted. And then, it got worse. After a little operation, the transmission started to make some noises. My friend called the service manager, who said, "It's fine drive it home."

Well, he did, and something came loose, with transmission pretty well grenading itself in road gear. It took out the case as well as the drive case for the MFWD. We won't get into the details of the bill, and the fight over who was paying what.

What you are showing is alarming. I was told the 10s with the steel case were better!

They are all cast steel,,no aluminum used in the case..and only the 10 series 19 speed power shift

I am pretty sure my father n law took the slack out of the back chain on the tractor when he loaded it and when he went to unload it there was pressure on it when he took it out of park, that's when he heard something snap. I figured the pawl was toast. I was just curious how much damage the pieces would do or if they would find their way to the bottom....thank you guys for the advice...I may try to take that cover off and go fishing : )
