4020 help reconnecting trans to clutch housing

4020 1964 synchro going back together between trans and clutch housing. Got it to where the dowel pins are started and
bolts even screw in about 3/8 inch. About 3/4 inch of space to go. PTO gears in mesh and turn. Input shaft to trans
seems to be in mesh, and turns trans top shaft. Still turns it when I back housings apart another 1/8 inch, so almost
has to be started in the hole. But it gets tight and flywheel does not want to turn if I start to draw the bolts in
more. I have tried all the tricks I know, jacking here, then there, tighining here, then there. How much pull does it
usually take with the bolts to get it in the rest of the way. I dont want to break anything. Advice appreciated!

"Don't Draw on the Bolts"..put the transmission in a higher gear(7 or 8)..put a guy on each rear wheel and give it a good shaking..some times the splines line up on top of each other and will let the shaft turn giving you the feeling that it is splined up,,and not be..the shaking in gear kinda shocks things to make them line up....If it don't go after that retreat and give all another look,,maybe the clutch shaft slipped out a bit and is not lining back up...take your time..walk away from it for a bit..some times that helps..

3/4 inch and contact, sounds like input shaft hitting the pilot bearing, did you replace that, maybe get the wrong one?

Dont use the bolts . try putting a chain from rear axle to front axle .Now stand on chain this will pull tractor together and not damage clutch or transmission . Last guy I saw who used the bolts when he was done I replaced his transmission case .$$$$$ You could check clutch disc maybe in wrong or wrong pilot bearing . Maybe disc has slipped while you were lining up your pilot shaft .When all else fails STOP and start over .

Had the same problem on my 3020. Replaced the trans input shaft with a newly rebuilt one. The end that goes into the pilot bearing wasn't chamfered like the old shaft. It was square off flat. Took 3 times rolling apart and comparing the old shaft to the new one to finally see the problem. 30 seconds with the flap disc on the angle grinder solved that problem and it went right together

we used to put a wrench on the pto shaft and turn it back and forth to get things together. Don't draw it together. You will push a shaft out the back of the transmission case.

I keep an old PTO yoke to slip on the shaft and turn it with a pry bar,,any thing you can turn to help with the line up helps,, I also use a measure stick and make sure the housings are lined up good..top bottom..side to side..

I found that using 10" long bolts with the heads cut off threaded into the case make a good guide and line-up to slide the half's together . Rock with PTO and it should slip right in.

Here is what I use,,a bolt cut with a screw driver slot in the end,,some places you can't use a long bolt..
