720 starter ring gear

I am told that if a ring gear has wear it can be rotated 1/4 turn on the flywheel and this will fix the problem because the motor doesn't stop there. Is this acccurate or should the ring gear just be entirely replaced?

It may work... you can also take it off and turn it around, using a small grinder to bevel the edges of the teeth like the original side had.

Yes take it off and rotate it to a different spot and it will work I did this to my 730 about 10 yrs ago and no more problems, You will have to pull the flywheel off.

Since the engine is going to stop when either 1 or 2 is coming up on compression, the starter "almost always" engages in about the same place on each start. The wear area becomes very conspicuous. Since you have to get the flywheel off the engine & ring gear off the flywheel, I'd do a complete flip as mentioned. You do have to bevel the inboard edge of each tooth, but labor-wise that's the least of the project. There are old posts of removing the ring gear you can refer to. I had to replace mine because it was already flipped and learned that Mother Deere is very proud of her new ring gears. Good luck and blessings of the season!

Are ring gears no longer available, or very expensive? Seems to be a lot of work to remove and put the same 60 year old part back on.

Also, I assume you are talking about a gasser... on the diesel, after shutting off the fuel I just pull the compression release and hold it until the engine comes to a complete stop. Random position on the ring gear :)
