1972 3020d runs and dies

I just bought a 72 3020D that the former owners says it will run and die when it warms up. 6700 hrs looks pretty clean for a using tractor. I checked the fuel tank, and there is plenty of flow. Also cracked the fuel line to the injector pump, and hand pumped the lift pump it looked good as well. What else should I check before I trie to start it? And if I get it running what do I check then. Thanks

May be time for injection pump service. Confirm by loosening the two screw timing cover, allowing fuel to leak out of the housing. If it runs OK WITH the fuel leak, but slows down-dies with the cover plate screws tight the pump needs serviced. Retaining ring bits are plugging the return fitting, when housing pressure matches plunger charge pressure plungers stop moving, so no fuel to the injectors. This test is assuming fuel supply TO the injection pump is verified OK, meaning supply pump and filter are in working condition. Have a Case 580 pump in for repair now for the same issue..

Tygeebill,
You didn't say how long before it died, one more simple item you may want to check. And I'm not saying this is the culprit but you may want to ensure that your fuel return line is not restricted. (Injectors to top of fuel tank). I learned that the hard way one time.

Make sure shut-off wire making good contact at stud on pump. Assume basic setup as 69 or 70 model even though pump is different.

Does this tractor have the glass fuel filter or the round canisters ,one on top of the other like some 4020s had? Had a 70 that would die after about 15 minuts. The top filter didn't have fuel in it . Converted it to glass square filter with kit from jd dealer ,no more problem.

Sorry I could not answer sooner. It has the square glass filter, The people I bought it off of used it as a loader tractor and could unload a trailer
or wagon before it would get warm and die. They quit using it when the batteries died. So I have not tried to start it yet, but hope to i the next
day or so.
