Late styled A air cleaner question.

How do I take the air cleaner apart to clean and repair it. Figured I better ask before I start prying on it.

Looking great. I'm envious!
I must encourage the purchase of the JD B shop
manual. I have found it invaluable. Pg 110-20-
2 has a section on "inspection and repair of
the air cleaner".
The air cleaner element is one piece.
"Kerosene or cleaning solvent,tends to
dissolve the slight amount of dirt in the
screens, and the dirt will wash out.
As per the manual I soaked the entire canister
in diesel for a few days. I then used an
oil/grease type solvent that I flushed through
the filter screens.
I the flushed with water and let dry.

The manual warns against steam cleaning as
that process tends to form small mud balls
between the screens which are just about
impossible to remove.
Great looking restoration to date!
Just got my 50 B running again after 10 months
of on again off again work periods.

I wouldn't try taking it apart. What you can do is set it in a pail of diesel, kerosene, mineral spirits or what ever your favorite solvent is and flush it out a bunch of times. Or better yet wash it in a parts washer if you have one. I did one in a B and I actually power washed both ends of the canister then flushed it in a pail with a mixture of diesel and gasoline. By the time I got done the diesel/gas mixture was running through the canister and coming out pretty clean. I'm guessing it had been cleaned before at one time though.

Nice looking A btw.

(quoted from post at 20:51:25 12/10/17) Why the yellow flywheel??

I bought a can of JD yellow that did not match the others I had, so I painted the flywheel. It will be covered so I thought it would be a conversation piece.

I ordered the wrong manual a while back, just have not ordered the right one yet. I have the operators manual, parts manual, I&T manual, and service bulletin CD.

I have rinsed it out with water and sprayed several cans of brake cleaner in it. I was wanting to repair the screen in the top of it. It has a couple of tears in it. It will not work very hard once I get it running. Pulling a brush cutter, rides and shows will be about it. I will leave the screen as is.

I have been at this project for 6 years off and on now. Work and other commitments have this project moving at a snails pace. Seems like life gets in the way of my hobby.

Just knowing that it's in there will be enough to give the correct police fits! :D

I think it's cool!
