Key Switch or Solenoid?

I have the following issue on my 1010:

Sometimes the key switch won't stop the starter. I'll go to turn the motor over and when I release the switch it keeps turning. Sometimes for just a few seconds, sometimes to the point where I have to rip off the battery cable. It's not a problem in the summer because the tractor normally starts immediately, but it's happened several times now that it's colder and taken longer to start. My key switch is NOT the original, but everything else electrical works. I have 2 other starters for this tractor but I haven't gone to the trouble of trying them.

Thoughts?

If the key is physically returning to the "run" position it's UNLIKELY to be the switch, but, of course, POSSIBLE.

More likely the starter solenoid is is sticking.

Hard cranking (cold) and weakened batteries make this more likely to happen.

Assuming you have the Delco starter and not the Prestolite, a new solenoid is less then $20. Plunger is likely hanging up or
the contacts inside might be arcing. If you wack it with a hammer and it stops - then you can assume the issue is the
solenoid. Note - wacking often with a hammer shorts the lives of some parts?

I'd do some trouble shooting before pull thing like the start. Take the small wire on the solenoid loose in such a way that you can pull it after you have started it and the starter keep spinning. If it keep spinning then you know it is the solenoid, If it stops it is the switch

When that happened to me it was usually COLD and/or the battery was weak and the cause was the starter solenoid contacts were burned and carboned and were sticking closed. Id first remove and clean and wire brush and re attach each and every battery and starter and ground cable and have the battery load tested and insure its full charged which may or may not help, but sure wont hurt, and you may well need a new solenoid if its burned and carboned and likely sticking closed.
