More Air Cleaner Questions

I can't decide if a 4020 looks better with or without an external air cleaner. I like two-cylinder 20 and 30 series better without air cleaners. What is the opinion of the forum?

In my mind, a round mufflered 4020 should have one. A late, oval mufflered console model looks a little awkward with one. You see the occasional 4320 without one as well, and that to me looks like something is missing.

I think it what you are used to looking at.

I agree with you. My 4520 does not have one and I think it would look better with it but it takes a good many parts on those to add it. Tom

It should be noted that the design firm of Henry Dreyfus and Associates was the lead behind putting air intakes under the hood, both with two cylinders and NG tractors. Function seemed to win out over form though, and above hood precleaners kept returning.

I deleted the air stack on my 4320 when I restored it. I think it looks better and simpler. Might go better if it has a cab, but the cab is gone now. It won't ever see dusty conditions again, which was the main purpose over looks.

Now on the older round muffler 4020s, I think it looks more natural to have it. The extended one with the mesh screen is what makes them so recognizable. From a distance you can easily tell what model it was if it had one.
