Smoked a thrust washer (70D)

A month or two ago, I replaced a broken fiber thrust washer and the (completely missing) flywheel spacer oil seal on my 70 Diesel. I used a bottle jack as a brace from the right tire to the clutch pulley, and set the play to .008 using a dial indicator. Started and ran fine, did a little bush hogging, all ok. Had a long session trying to get the tach (Indian copy) and cable working, no problems then.

Today I fired up the tractor and while out in the woods clearing an old logging road with the bush hog, smoke started coming from the flywheel cover  It smelled exactly like burning phenolic, not oil or rubber (many years of experience tinkering with electronics), so I am fairly confident it was the thrust washer which is made of that material.

By the time I was able to get back to the barn, the smoke had stopped. I haven't remeasured the end play yet but I can see the clutch pulley moving with the clutch lever (not a huge amount but definitely more than .008").

So how could I have smoked a thrust washer after carefully setting the clearance "by the book" and running the engine with no trouble? :?:

I laughed as I read your post, because I had
the exact same problem with my '57 720
diesel. Even the Indian tach and cable
trouble! On mine, I started comparing part
numbers on my tractor to the part numbers in
the book. Ended up figuring out I had a 730
crankshaft and main bearing housing (which
uses a completely different set up for the
endplay) but the rest of the parts were
original, early 720 style. The mix of parts
did not work together and the thrust washer
would not stay in place. I ended up calling
salvage yards and converting the rest of the
parts over to the 730 style.

This probably isn't your problem, but it's
one thing you could check.

I have been into a few of the 70d and 720D and I'm pretty sure most of them had the wrong mismatched parts in there too. Pretty hard to sort it all out too.

(quoted from post at 09:19:25 12/05/17) I have been into a few of the 70d and 720D and I'm pretty sure most of them had the wrong mismatched parts in there too. Pretty hard to sort it all out too.

I know mine has been "Frankentractored" over the years since it had 720D decompression and start levers (but 70D pony starter and pedal) when I got it... and I recently finished the conversion to 720D pushbutton start myself

If/when I get the flywheel off again, I'll check but all the pieces looked like the 70D parts book diagram. The new outside thrust washer (that I replaced because the old one was broken/torn) fit in the housing properly and I was careful not to dislocate it when installing the flywheel, as the manual cautions. Anyhow it seems to have quit burning, so must have worn in... I am inclined just to leave well enough alone :?
