4020 Power Shift Issue

i can't find neutral on my 4020. I have removed the linkage and manually shifted the control valve arms, have forward and reverse, neutral spot is forward. I have all 8 speeds for forward and 4 for reverse. when i put it in park, it labours bad to killing the engine. Today when linkage disconnected, i put in park and let out on inching peddle and it grinds.

Seems like the valve for direction selecting is letting flood by.

Thoughts on this?

I will second a clutch pack stuck. So it can not rotator freely for neutral. Not uncommon on the PS tractors.

It should labor in some of the other gears too not just neutral.

The power shift diagnostic is done with a gauge bar that hooks to all clutch packs and brake packs at the same time . With out this tool to give you pressures in real time you can have a very difficult time finding problems . If you can get a gauge bar its not hard to find problems . the service manual has the procedure and pressures . Its a long way in and out of some brake packs . Knowing the problem before you start will make your job much easier .

Does this mean replacing the clutch pack? Is there a manual on the power shift to use for reference?

The 4020 John Deere manual explains how to fix the powershift.
You can get a rebuild clutch pack, but you can also fix yours. It is rare that everything at the same time needs to be replaced, and the cost for fixing the powershift is actually cheaper than the SR.

Don't start worring about repalcing this or that.

First thing that you must do is to perform the dianostics pressure checks. This is in the JD service manaul which is a must for this job. You will also need a pressure guage and hoses to check the clutch and brake pressures. This woud be done on the shift valve on the lower right side of the transmission (where shift linkage hooks up). Talk with your local dealer, my loacl Mega-Dealer is awasome :) and will work and help there customers out with tools and knowlage. They may let you borrow a trest gauge or atleast show you what you need to get.

I rebuilt the Powershift on my 4020 a couple of years ago and it is not that bad of a job and I will second that it is cheaper to rebuild than a syncro. Worst case, is that you will have to seperate the tractor and pull the clutch pack / brake units and then take it to your loacal dealer to have them rebuild if you do not feel confident.
