4650 / 466 Troubles

I have a 4650 that is breathing heavy out the blow by with water droplets and the coolant level drops my question is could it be the water pump? I have heard they will leak internal how ever I checked the weep hole and cleaned it out and appears to be dry. Any suggestions? Tractor only has 5000hrs but has sat a lot before I bought it a couple days ago. Bad part is I bought it from a neighbour that retired several years ago and hope this is nothing to major. My last Deere was a 4430 years ago.

Yes it could be the water pump,,and if you get a Deere reman be sure the gear spins freely,,I got one last year that was pressed together too tight and turn very hard,,they won't work out like that..

Is there any checks to perform to see if that is the problem? Couple other things- it didn't run hot and didn't push any coolant out the over flow and no white smoke.

Slowly back out the oil pan drain to see if there is antifreeze in the oil.
If so probably water pump on those engines. Could also be hole in liner.

As D stated and then one step further drop the oil pan and put a radiator tester on and pump a little pressure to it,,look to see if water is coming down the timing gear or a liner..and yes this is messy...

If your very lucky could be water pump i held on to hope of that on our 7800 but when droped pan and preasurized tadiator eventually found slow leak around number 6 sleve where oring was failing so its getting a full in frame rebuild. Caurght it quick never mixed coolant and oil but did drain a couple table spoons of water out evety morning for a week n sat on edge of seat hopeing to get finshed fertilizing

Maybe I am confused here but HOW would you check the "weep" hole on a timing gear driven water pump????? They leak internally.

Pull the oil pan and check if you want. I would pull the oil pump off and look at it you can usually tell if they have been leaking. With 5000 hours it is due for a new water pump.

Also remember that a JD 4650 was usually the "BIG" horse on most farms. Meaning it more than likely had the snot pulled out of it the majority of those hours. It is not like a smaller tractor that does low HP jobs a lot of the time.

Where is the fuel pump set on it too??? I have seen two JD 4650s that would have a water leak because of a seeping head gasket. New head and planed block, head gaskets still would weep at 500 hours or so. Both had been turned WAY up for years before they started doing this. Suspected cracked or bad block.

So hope water pump and pray not a deeper problem.

The 50 series Does have a external weep hole Deere had trouble with them filling with dirt and they wouldn't drain so they sent out little foam pieces to put in the holes so they didn't fill tight with dirt .

Quick update pulled the water pump after I seen a tiny bit of coolant sludge in the timing gear cover with my flexible camera and it sure looks like that's what was leaking.I changed the oil right after I drove it home when I bought it and there was no coolant in the oil it and was all ok, whatever happened seems like it started today. JDseller I checked the injection pump still has the factory seals on it. New water pump tomorrow and cross my fingers.LOL!!

Just had this happen last fall on our 4455. Same story, blow by with coolant drops and nothing out of cleaned out weep hole. Drained the oil and had small amount of coolant in it. Pulled the oil pan and pressure tested the radiator to find a slow leak from waterpump. Glad I pulled the pan as it had some pretty ugly slime from the coolant and oil mixing. Did a couple short hour oil changes to get rid of leftover moisture and it's fine now. Might not hurt to flush the cooling system if it's been sitting for awhile.

I'd like to know what JD engineers were smoking when they decided to drive water pump from timing gears. IMHO 466 engine water pumps operated just fine. I've put 2 water pumps on my 4255 since I purchased it in '93. IMHO the WP drain hole on 6076 is a PITA to locate when pump is mounted on engine. [/url]
