4020 successfully split, problem found

I found a splitting stand to borrow, so that was a big help. The pto shaft front drive gear has two teeth missing, both of which ended up jammed in between other teeth. The two idler gears look ok, but I have not taken them off for a thorough inspection. Where can I get a new gear? Should I put in all new gears, go with a used one, or what would you guys do. I use the pto for haying pretty regularly. Thanks for your advice.

I tore mine down last winter for other reasons and found one tooth broke off and a second half broken off the bottom pto gear. Never made any noise and worked fine. I wonder when it happened before or after I bought it(have owned it 27 years). Tom

Check and see if one of the 3/8" bolts holding the front of the top shaft are missing,, I have seen them come loose and that is where they ended up.. On on 4020 several years ago,,probably 12 or so this happened and locked the PTO up,, we split it and found the problem,, the owner talked me into reusing the gears even though there was a bit of a nick in one of them,,so it ticked a bit and he said it would wear in eventually,,I asked him a month ago if it still ticked,, he said yes,,so keep that in mind...

4020 used parts are easy enough to find, and you have done òost of the job by splitting the tractor.

I would certainly defer to Tim S or others more experienced, but where metallurgy is involved I buy the JD Parts to "hopefully" ensure I get a part with the best and required metallurgy. Think about how long those JD parts went on the PTO with balers and others banging torque spikes through them.

You already did the heavy lifting getting it all apart, put in the best parts.

Just my thoughts.

Yes Paul,, Quality Deere parts "Use to Be" some thing to count on,,but not so much any more they job a lot to China and India where quality is not important,,and of course they charge us double to keep profit minded..The clutches that you get from other sources are the exact same ones that Deere will sell you...

Just remember , that bad gear run against an old one causing a tooth to have a wear mark (unseen crack etc.) I would want all new gears involved . Short turns with a pto driven machine causes these gears to ratchet against each other . If you can hear it its too late . Set the drawbar the proper length to help this .
