Not turning over well

So when my jd b is cold and you go to start it, it will turn over once, maybe twice, then disengage and just spin the starter and not the engine. It takes a couple times then finally the engine starts. This happens even when getting jumped. Every once in awhile, it will stay engaged till I release the starter pedal. So...what could be causing this?

Timing could be off some and the engine fires but not enough to start so the bendex get kicked out of the flywheel. Or you have a bad bendex

It will do the same thing with ignition off. Turns over about half a turn then just spin starter

(quoted from post at 12:01:24 11/22/17) My vote is for a bad/slipping starter drive.

That's what my thoughts were too. I really need to do a compression test on it because it also seems to have a ton of compression. I was talking to a buddie and he said it could be possible that someone did work on the engine

I agree with the bendix going out. That is a really easy fix. It took me longer to get the starter out than changing the bendix. Second, look under the block on the tractor. There should be two compression valves. You could open those when it is cold. That will release the compression and turn the engine over easier. I had a 48 that I needed to do that on. That is why Deere put them there! If they are not there you can always get a pair and install them.

You could also have too much end play on the crankshaft. Resetting the endplay to .005 to .010 will bring the flywheel closer to the
starter. One other possibility is a bad ring gear.

Is the starter ring gear slipping on the flywheel?? Or yes the bendex may be bad.

Had the same problem on my 51 B. Starter drive gear assembly was shot. Replaced that and it works perfectly now.

My $.02: Next time it starts spinning, get under it with a light and check condition of ring gear near the point where slipping started. The "double barrels" always stop with either #1 or #2 coming up on the
compression stroke, so the teeth get worn and starter engagement is compromised. It probably does need a new starter drive, and that may fix it for a while (did for me), but the day of reckoning with the ring
gear will come. If that's an issue, post back and get suggestions for options. Good luck! And a happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Yes, remove the plate and the flywheel cover. There's three bolts holding the starter to the main case. Also disconnect the battery cable from the starter switch once you get the plate off. Be careful because that starter is heavy.
