4020 Steering

A friend was telling me his 4020 has about a quarter turn play/non-response in the steering wheel when he is traveling down the road. It sounds excessive. What is causing this? Tim S or anyone else?

First suspect is the steering motor, when the piston seals leak off a bit it creates a small void, which ends up being lost or free travel,, it can wreck you..better deal with it soon.

Did you look real close at bell crank on top of spindles and under steering motor . I have seen very small amounts of movement cause steering wheel travel . Most times this slack is caused by wear in the steering valve . These can be hard to adjust .

On the subject of steering motors, how do the components in the main cavity receive oil for lubrication? I.E. Pinion, piston racks, & bearings.......I didn't notice any porting in the motor housing itself and wondered if the system relied on leakage from the piston seals or???

Reason I ask is I'm in the process of resealing the steering motor from our 4020 and was wondering if the case should be filled prior to installation on the tractor?
