Got a 5400 John Deere tractor, about a 1998 model. About a year and a half ago it would all of a sudden, just die. Let it set a few minutes and it would start back if you pumped the primer button on top of the fuel filter housing. Bought a low pressure electric fuel pump and plumbed it between the fuel tank and the fuel filter. Worked great until 3 days ago. Same old problem except this time I am getting air from the bleed screw at the filter housing. Bleed some air off and it will start right up and it may run for 4 hours or it may run for just 10 seconds. All clamps are tight, no leaks, pump is pumping. What's going on or what have I missed?

Nothing obvious as to where the air is entering the system. Today I did get all new rubber lines to replace the old ones. But then, again, thare are no leaks letting diesel fuel out.

Replace the rubber fuel lines clear back to the tank. They crack and let air in but not fuel out. This has been an issue on the JD 5000 series for close to 20 years now. No need for an electric pump with good fuel lines.

Also pull the primer pump off the top of the fuel filter. Just loosen the plastic retaining ring and it comes right off. They will gather gunk under that pump and it will eventually restrict the fuel flow.

I have seen this in other models of JDs it was a restriction in fuel suction in tank . Just blow back into tank with air hose . Remember to remove fuel tank cap first . If this works drain or clean tank will be needed .
