4020 rear axle seal

So my rear axle seal has gone out on my 4020. How hard is it to replace? I am imagining I have to take off the tire and wheel. Then take off all the bolts on the housing? is there anything else I should know about it? I am trying to decide whether or not to do this myself. Is it a fairly straight forward? quick to do?

No you don't need to take the wheel off the seals are serviced from the other end, you will need to pull the final drive, and you can do this with a normal floor crane using the legs to support the wheel.

The axle bearings have probably lost their pre-load and let the seals wear out, the inner seal is the one that keeps the oil in, the outer seal is just a grease seal, there in a spacer that sets against a lip on the axle that wears and lets all this start to happen..

So just take the 12 bolts of the housing and pull the housing, axle and wheel? and for a floor crane would an engine hoist work? just get the wheel to sit in between the legs? Make sure the other part of the tractor is supported when splitting the housing from the tractor?

Yes,, and of course drain the oil first,,I have some pics for you just been kinda busy,, I will share more with you after bit..

That is an important step! It took 5 bags of oil dry when I pull a 4320 axel housing without draining the oil!

Thank you, so as long as I had all the seals and bearings, should be a half day job? and when you said preload are they tightened to a certain foot pound?

There are a couple ways of doing it,, I will tell you more,,I was just covered up today..

Was wondering if you could describe how to do this?

Cradle the rear wheel and unbolt the final drive, roll it away from the tractor,,remove the inner bolt and pull the planetary out of the housing,,(watch your fingers0,,now pull the housing off the axle,,you can get it to work in and out like a slide hammer till it's off,,now the outer bearings are exposed, knock the rollers out of the bearing ,clean the grease off and heat the inner race up and drive it off the axle,,and the spacer behind it,,remove the wear cup out of the housing,, now install the outer seal onto the new spacer,,warm the space up with a heat gun and drive it onto the axle,,then heat the outer bearing up and drive it onto the axle,,install the new wear cup into the housing, and the inner oil seal, pack the outer bearing with grease,,slip the housing back onto the axle,,drive the new inner bearing onto the axle, and put the copper washer on,,stick 2 small pieces of lead onto the end of the axle across from each other (fish line sinkers work nice) install the planetary with no shims and tighten it down with an air wrench tight,, now pull the planetary back off and measure the thickness of the mashed lead,,and that many shims less .oo5 (for preload,,now put the planetary back on and don't forget the lock,,

Do you have a part number or know where I can get a shim pack for this at?

not handy,, I just work out of a stack of them here,, I will look after bit for a part number..

I can't seem to find any in parts yet,, the bolt is 1" dia. you may find some 1" machine washers in town to get you close....

will something like this work? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002C2GPJ4/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

or is there usually quite of a bit of gap to fill?

Not to jump over others. You may want to up grade bolt to A grade #8 To. I have some info to preload torque bolt 400-600 Ft lbs. Can't remember? Have 1 more axel to do myself .

Fixing to tear down the axle in the next couple of weeks. Would it be beneficial for me to rebuild the brakes while I am in there?

They will be right there to inspect,,if they look like new and tight on the rivets..leave them alone,,if they are fraying and loose on the rivets replace them..Deere will try to sell you a upgrade replacement,,but you can still get pads and rivets,,when you get to that point i can help you with ideas on all that
