JD 50 shift lever/forks

HI
just picked up a 50 to replace the B that was destoyed in a barn fire over the summer.
The 50 runs great except it is hard to get in reverse. It was like this when I got it and the guy selling it said the lever was bent, which it did look bent. I replaced it with a straight one and it still barely gets into reverse. You can feel the gear just starting to engage. ALso, it seems to go into first early...so I am thinking it needs adjustment? I have the manuals and it talks about shfter shaft adjustment. But does not go into to much detail. Anybody out there that has worked on the shifter shaft adjustment? thank you

Do you have a B service manual from JD ? It will go into real good detail on trans. repair. B and 50 share many of the same parts in there.
Been a long time since I did one, but basically you adjust the over/under drive shifter to get full engagement of the teeth with the input shaft. The 4 th & 6th shifter is not adjustable. I think you put this one in one of it's detent positions and then align all the rest up to it with a straight edge. Illustration should be in the book. Maybe even in the I&T book. You really need access to both sides to adjust it properly, but maybe you can get it enough from just the left cover ? Also you may even have a bent or loose shift fork ? Easy enough to pull the trans. top off and look around in there and shift them by hand with a pry bar. You may also have some bad bearings on the shafts dropping them out of position ?
