John Deere 2955

I have a John Deere 2955. The 3pt has gotten slow and shaky
at times. The steering works fine but almost locks up when
you raise the 3pt. It is not always slow and works fine
sometimes. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

How long since hyd filter was changed & hyd sump screen checked/cleaned? While checking sump screen(key 39) also check hyd filter relief valve(key 28-31)to be sure it's not stuck open. Is hyd oil at full mark? Is tractor equipped with a frt end loader? If so what type valve controls loader? Do hyd's operate the same with control lever in rabbit & turtle?? Also I'd advise to check hyd stand-by pressure which should be 2250 psi.

If the steering fails while the 3 point is lifting then your priority valve needs adjustment .3 point , front loader , selective control are after priority . All hyd. repair should start with filer change and oil check . If you have not saw suction screen for a long time or have had a recent wet clutch repair . You should drain the oil and pull the screen . I like to use a clean 1/4 barrel and drain at suction screen . Its messy but I think it cleans sump better . Clean 1/4 barrel gives me a chance to see what was in bottom off trans. Remember this is a closed center variable displacement system if an open center control valve is in the system it will consume large amounts of oil even when it is not being used . The chatter you feel or see is your main front pump is running out off oil . This can be caused by trans pump and return circuit not providing enough oil to main pump or open valves needing more oil than main pump can supply . Remember main pump has NO SUCTION it must have ALL off its oil provided to it .

The filter and oil have both been recently changed. The hyd oil is full and i will check the filter bypass valve. it does not have
a loader and the hydraulics seem to operate close to the same in any of the control lever positions or at least I can not tell any
major differences. Thanks

Thank you again for all the help. I tried checking the Hyd filter
bypass valve but is there a way to get it out or check it in
there. I can not get it out. Does this mean it's stuck. Thanks
again

I think filter by pass valve just pulls out . You can disassemble it after its removed . If its stuck you probably found at least part if not all of your problem . I have always been able to just worry it in and out a lot and free them up . Try to be good to your bore in trans case . Good luck .

As Gene stated hyd filter relief valve should pull out with little resistance. It's possible for it to be stuck in either the open or closed position.

You can entertain your self with these ideas , but your problem will be deeper...Darn it

The lose off oil supplied to main pump can be in the trans controls ,HIGH LOW ,or FORWARD REVERSE , or PTO CLUTCH or PTO BRAKE if your tractor has them . You can usually find these internal leaks by shifting to the other gear ie from high to low or low to high and jerking will stop . a flow rater is the best tool for this problem BUT not every one can afford one
. You can increase oil supply to the front pump by returning oil from 3 point to the return circuit , BUT it will increase the pressure in the return circuit which is OK if you dont have any light weight single acting cylinders you hook to your remote hook ups . This option is use alot for hyd motors . Usually trans pumps supply only part off oil that a main pump can supply . The remainder of the oil is supplied to your main pump comes from the return circuit via trans RETURN filter witch is protected by the filter relief valve .

I've never heard before today of routing 3 pt return oil to return circuit nor can I envision a simple way to perform this task. Could you please elaborate?

I'm aware JD offered a kit to route scv return oil to hyd filter.
Thanks,Jim

Yes putting return oil into filter housing will make it available to the main pump bypassing trans pump this will increase output on main pump if needed .

SORRY my mistake Isaid 3point Im wrong I should have said selective control return to filter not 3 point

Gene
You're welcome. I think info posted should be as correct as possible. Sadly it seems the older I get the more mistakes I make especially my proof reading.
