John Deere 14T Baler

I'm going to go look at a JD 14T Baler this weekend. Never owned or used one. It seems the price is right when compared to others online. It has been parked under a tarp for 2 years outside, but when it was used, it was supposedly parked indoors. It looks original, with some surface rust.

I have seen a pretty informative inspection video online from a Shawn Larrabee. Any advice on what to look for on this type of model?

Thanks,
Robert

Wasn't it rumored that there are only 2 types of balers ? The ones that work good and then the ones that are for sale ? lol.

Its been yearsssssssssssss since I ran a 14 but had good luck with them back when so long as I didn't crowd or hurry them. If you can string it up and roll through a few tie cycles you can see the general timing and if the needles track and line up correctly etc. Any time I had one that had set a while I tried to polish up the and billhooks all bright n shiny in which case they may even tie correct yayyyyyyyyyy lol

Best wishes and God Bless all here

My uncle runs a 24T. That thing works great. I really think the biggest problem they have, as long as its run correctly, that the jack falls lol. I took a look at it once and it's a really odd design that could've been a lot simpler but what ever. Other than that just look for broken picker teeth and any major wear on bushings, the auger, and especially go over the knoters. Those are the most complicated thing on the machine and I believe most expensive to replace if broke. Now I believe they are cast so check to see if they ever broke in the past and were braised or fixed in any way. If they were then there could be more wrong with it. Check under the picker and see if they ran over any big rocks or anything. It would be best if they would let you hook it to a tractor and let it run and trip the knoters. Then just go over it like usually, look for replaced/fixed parts or different colored/faded or shiner pained parts. These balers are well built and can take a beating, but like anything they can and will break lol. Just go over everything. Oh and one more thing, make sure you buy extra sheer bolts for the flywheel. They don't go too often but when they do it sucks having to shut down completely and run into town to get more. We just keep them in the box for the twine. Take some pics if you get it! Hope this helps a little!

Had an intermittent problem with one side not tying properly on my 14T. All looked good however when I picked the bale up one side (side closest to twine bin) would let loose. Turned out the roll pin that keeps the 2 piece needle lift arm from telescoping had rusted out and every time the knotter would trip and the arm would bring the needles up it would slip every so slightly so that the needles did not come to the knotters 100%. Apparently one of the knotters was more forgiving than the other as this only affected one side. I drilled out the remaining part of the rusted out roll pin and put a new one in the baler has only missed once in several hundred bales which I can live with. Good luck as the 14T is a good baler.
