If you pull the drum brake back it will try to stall the motor. As soon as you start to crank the motor the drum will start turning and you can't stop it.Withe the motor off it is fine. Can spin the drum, put the handle foward and it snaps in and the clutch is locked in.

The adjustment on my 50 is touchy. You have to balance between clutch release and pulley brake engagement. If you get it wrong, the clutch will engage again when you pull the lever all the way back. Naturally, when you pull the lever back you're wanting to stop - but instead of stopping, it goes - so you pull a little harder and things go bad in a hurry. Gotta get it right or someone will get hurt. My 50 is a real early one, and I think they improved the adjustment on the newer ones.

Had the same problem on a JD 70. If U have a new aftermarket pulley brake, The lining on the brake pad is too thick which makes it a lot harder to get the right adjustment. I replaced the pad with a new original one and It works great. I think some of these aftermarket Mfgs. have the attitude that U can throw anything on these old tractors and they'll work.

Thank s to everyone for all of the info. We will keep playing with it until we get it adjusted right.

Just want to thank everyone for the help. It turned out to be way to much end play in the crankshaft. Moved the flywheel in to about .005" and was able to adjust the brake.Everything works like it should. Thanks again for all of the info.
