Easiest way is with the correct OTC or Snap On wrench.

By the way - just curious. Are you fixing your Delco starter or swapping to an Asian gear-reduction starter? I recently put
a brand new GR starter on my 1020 and found out certain fuel-pumps interfere with the starter install. I had to grind on my
fuel-pump but a different brand pump also would of fixed the problem. Cannot beat $89 for a brand-new GR starter. I retired
my Delco.

JDEM . Could you share the specs on the gear reduction starter ? I tried to swap out the 3Kw Bosch on my 1640 with the 4Kw Bosch however it won’t clear the loader side frames .
The three cylinder doesn’t leave a lot of room for the starter .

That wrench works great on 3020-4020's and 30-40 series and newer but will not help him as his starter is on the opposite side of the engine making the offset backwards on that wrench. I do not know if there was a special wrench but we took one and heated it up and bent it almost in a big U. It helps but it is still not fun removing starters from utility tractors. Tom

I use a 1/4 drive socket and extensions.
I also have a heat bent wrench but loader
frames are tough to work around.

My starter came from DB Electric. A Chinese no-name starter that supposedly uses AC Delco parts, if needed It did come with a
spec sheet that I threw out. It the 4th I have gotten and all have been fine. Two on Deeres and two on diesel pickup trucks.
On my 300B, the fuel-pump interfered. Not the original fuel-pump though so I cannot blame the starter-maker. Problem is that
big tin-can Airtex pump. Deere sells a smaller take-apart pump that is smaller and does not interfere. It is even cheaper in
cost then the Airtex. Sofabex, made in France (at least the original ones from Deere were). )

Thanks for replying. I will have to see about getting one of the Snap On wrenches because that bottom bolt is hard to get and the Deere wrench does not work. Tom

Looks like she is a clone of the 2.9Kw 28MT. It appears that the 29MT has the same power , same diameter and is shorter .
The 4.3 Kw 35MT is a 1/4” dia larger and 1/2” longer . If it fits , there should be more winter starting power in the four and six cylinder applications .
If the 7.3Kw 39MT could be jammed in there it would wail the engine over no matter the temperature if there is battery power to do it .

I some times remove top bolt then use a 3/8 drive 9/16 SHORT socket with a old 12 inch ext. The starter may have to come off to free the socket but it can make removal
faster and easer
