4200 Plow gets new wear parts

I put all new wear parts on my JD 4200 3x18" rollover plow. I did a lot of cleaning up surfaces and had to do a little grinding to get those "made in mexico" parts to fit well. I also put in all new grade 8 bolts and nuts just to eliminate problems.

Next year I am going to open up the trip mechanisms to see what the wear looks like. They all trip but sometimes don't reset well.

Here are two of my three shed cats. They sleep by day and hunt by night.

Where do you get your moldboard paint? I can only find it at the JD store, have to buy 3 cans for a 2 bottom rollover. One to break the nozzle off getting the lid off, one to spray all over my hand, and the last one to get most of the frame from trying figure out where it's going to spray and some of the moldboards painted before it quits. Then I just smear grease and walk away. Dry out here so rust not big issue.

I have been using the JD "Soft Black Paint" Aerosol the last two years. $7-8 a can. It is on the paint shelf at my JD Dealer. Before that I got a form of the same thing I could put on with a brush but they don't stock that anymore. You really got to shake this stuff so it is not separated.

I also saw "Till Guard" Part Number: 121249 at All States Tractor Parts. $5.99 for an Aerosol can. On my next order to All States I plan to order some for next year.

People use this stuff on planter parts they want to protect in storage so someone with a strong Planter Parts Inventory might also have it.

Oh, nasty stuff. Make sure you wear a respirator when you put this stuff on even if you are outside.

I got a good laugh at your description as to how it goes. You are so spot on.

I will give you three sources:

I have been having good luck at my JD Dealer, especially for the Left Handed Parts. Given JD has the Left Handed parts I tend to go there. The new version of the online electronic catalog has all my 4200 Plow wear parts, right and left. The rear landsides I can only get from their Antique Warehouse and they are spendy so I am concerned their availability may be limited. So I buy ahead.

What is the model of your JD Plow? If you are not familiar with their on-line parts ordering I could look up your plow and at least see what they show. I would let you know.

Tyler Buchheit at [email protected] and his website at www.mrbtractors.com. His hobby is plows, he writes for Green Magazine (The November issue he wrote about his corn picking experience.), and he has a lot of new and used plow parts available. Don't forget shipping. He was at the last Gathering of The Green with lots of plow parts. If you enter an order maybe you can meet him at the Gathering of The Green to sidestep shipping.

I have been ordering more things from Shoup Mfg. So far I have been impressed with quality and shipping speed. I got a catalog and I see lots of plow parts reasonably priced. Not all plow parts are in the catalog so I would want to call them. The Fall 2017 Catalog says Free Shipping on orders over $200. Of course they are on-line and their number of 1-800-627-6137. Or Shoupparts.com.

What I have noted is there are several grades of plow shares so prices vary greatly. The JD shares I buy are spendy but very much top of the line in wear properties.

Also, get yourself the correct bolts AND nuts for your plow parts. It does not work to put a grade two nut on a grade 8 bolt, the threads just stretch like crazy and it won't tighten. Do your self a favor and get the right hardware and you will be much happier with your job.

I hope that helps and answers your question.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. My plow is a 4200 also. Being the cheapskate I am, I was hoping to find LH bottoms cheaper than Deere. Plow is not used a lot, so I don't need top of the line wear parts.

I have been using product called grafcoat its a grafite paint . comes in 1 gallon cans it works SUPER . Not only stops rust in winter but lubes bottoms in spring . No need to clean .helps with break in . Not as much scraping

I went back through my e-mails from Tyler and looked at the Shoup catalog online. There are LH parts to be had.

Looks sharp!

Bash if you want but I use Amsoil Metal Protector in a spray can. Tall can is about $9. It stinks when you put it on but dries to a non-tacky film with no smell. I put the stuff on plow bottoms and coulters when done, in the fertilizer spreader, on the planter, etc. Says it also lubricates some, not sure on that. However it comes off nice and easy once the plow hits the dirt the next time.

Wiese at Wieseindustries.com usually have the left hand stuff for the 18" NU bottoms. The finish is not as good as the Deere stuff on the moldboards but they work and they are cheaper. I have a couple of there moldboard and a full set of shares from them on mine right now. The trick is finding a dealer.
I used JD soft black until our dealer would not bring it in, I then went back to grease.
