Elephant Ears

On the left elephant ear is a projection with a 3/4 or 7/8 hole. Does anyone know what is the purpose of this hole?

I assume you are talking about the three point hitch on a two banger. The hole is for a big spring that goes from that hole up to a bolt in the three point arm to pull the three point down. I don't know a reason for it though. The spring has been off of my 630 for a good thirty years, maybe more and the three point has always come down just fine. There has to be a good reason for it because it came with the tractor.

If the throttle valve is set really slow for heavy implements so they don't drop too fast and possibly damage the implement when lowering with hitch without any implement installed it would be really slow. The spring helped pull it down faster.
