2240 dipstick follow up

So the dipstick was broken off and I found that the early
2240s had a screw on dipstick, but before the second series
they went to this type of dipstick. The late series had a plastic
bushing and a different plastic dip stick. This one is no longer
available from Deere. Found this one in a junkyard.

Hydraulic capacity is 7 1/2 gallons and I drained over 15 out of this when I change fluid and filter's. Guess they couldn't check the fluid and just wanted to make sure there was plenty in it. Everything works the way it should so I think it's all OK. New to me tractor and mower. Came from an estate and appears to be a low hour tractor.

It is somewhat unusual to see a 2240 with the tall rubber. I have seen a lot more 1020 and 1520's set up that way. I like them that way. You also have the strait front axle which is a plus as well. If you 2240 does as well for you as the 2040 I have you will be happy. Dad bought mine new (1977) and it has about 7000 hours on it and the engine has never been touched. Thanks for replying back as it is nice to here how things work out. Tom

That's for the later Series and uses a plastic bushing. The dipstick is plastic and won't fit in the steel bushing.

Rack and pinion rear axle is unusual. Looks like your tractor could be related to the 1140.http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/004/0/6/4060-john-deere-1140.html
The nose peice that was replaced can be swapped for the nose peice from a 50 or 55 series Tractor . This will add headlights where they are needed .
