Hello, i recently picked up a 4020 for a small farm yard and have run into a few issues that makes me question what this tractor really is. If any of you are able to decode this vin or can comfirm by the description or know what to check on the tractor to confirm that would be great! Vin on rear of tractor: T1113R 127736R,
Local john deere dealer told me it was a 3020 when i called for a range shifter arm but i thought 3020 were all 4 cyls?
Tractor has:
6cyl engine, no vin tag, vertical mounted pump, large body injectors,
12v, looks original not converted
Diff lock
Side hyd controls by right hip
Pto control on LHS of dash

Is it possibly this tractor has been peices together? All connections between trans and engine look OEM nothing hacked together by any means. Any help on this is greatly Appreciated

I can’t help with decoding the serial number, but I suspect it’s been put together, a lot of parts are shared between the 4020/3020 so it will look factory.

4020 side console starts at SN 201,000
3020 side console starts at SN 123,000, yours is 127,xxx so I suspect 3020.

You can confirm this by checking casting numbers.

3020 would have either R40590 or R47080 casting number for the transmission case depending on SN

4020 would have either R40470 or R47340 casting number for the transmission case depending on SN

Yes all 3020's had 4 cyl engines. 6 cyl diesel engine with large inj would most likely be a 4020 engine before engine serial number <090999) (TRACTOR SERIAL NO. -200999)

What Jim said, plus a little more... if it has big injectors, engine is from a 64 4020 or a 4010.

Sounds like someone mated a 4010/20 front to a 3020 rear end...

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but there are worse things in life, and it should be functional as is.

It could also just be the SN plate that is swapped.
Check Trans case casting number to make sure. The dash on 4020 sits lower as 4020 so if you install hood of 4020 on 3020 bottom of hood would line up with the top of front plate.

check tractor VIN number again. You have too many digits after the T.

What size are the axle shafts?

All the other "Tractor Has" indicates it is a 1969 or newer. Except I don't know about injectors.

Yes 3020's were all 4 cylinder.

Axle size would tell you.3 3/8 0n 4020 and 3 1/8 on 3020 rear.Your S.N. says the rear is 69 3020. In 48 years lots of thing could have happened.I assume your dealer went by your S.N. as 4cyl versus 6 would be obvious.Probably not a big deal as the 4010/3020/4000 had very few problems regarding rear end. I bought a 4430 that had 3 5/8 axles and couldnt fiqure out why but found it was and option with longer axles and heavy 8 bolt front. Also have seen a few 4320 with Stolper cabs and found they had some left over so dealer installed them intead of the correct Hinsen.Been a few 4320 power shift showing up and a few still have 4020 serial number in place. If it works fine its not much different than engine change just not original.
