Transmission Filter screen

I have a JD 2640 that I bought used. Since I had no idea of how long ago the transmission had been serviced, if ever, I thought it wise to change the transmission filter. This tractor has a filter plus a transmission screen, which is a cylinder about two inches in diameter and about ten inches long....about.

The filter bowl came off rather easy. It looks like an old style oil filter.

The screen, however, is behind a type of cover that has a half-inch square socket hole. I put a socket wrench in this, and it won't budge. I was pulling so hard on it that the square opening is starting to round off. It's frozen. I do not want to break the cover by wallowing out the little square hole. I don't know what I would do if that happened.

My questions are;
--Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this off without breaking it? Just keep spraying liquid wrench?
--What would be the consequences if I never change this screen? If I just change the filter, would that be enough?

Thanks in advance.

If TX Jim's idea does not work I have used a dull chisel on the edge of them and a few hard wacks with a hammer usually spins them off. It is a very good idea to check that screen every few years as it will tell you how good your tractor brakes are as those screens pick up lots of pieces. I also place a cow magnet inside the screens when reinstalling them. There is a company that makes a magnet that fits inside as well. Tom

I'm with Jim,, smack it real hard a couple times with a hammer and it may come out with your ..fingers..

Had one on our 2550 that wouldn't come out. It had been egged out long long ago. Used the hammer trick then put a breaker bar on it. I had to kind of jump on the breaker bar to get it loose. The square hole was shot after that. The plug was still available from Deere and was around $20 for the 2550 IIRC. So as long as you don't mess up the threads in the housing you can replace the plug. It should have an o-ring on it. Well worth replacing that as well. Double check JD parts to make sure they have the plug.

That is exactly what happened with the plug on my 4020. :D
