I have a JD 2640 that I bought used. Since I had no idea of how long ago the transmission had been serviced, if ever, I thought it wise to change the transmission filter. This tractor has a filter plus a transmission screen, which is a cylinder about two inches in diameter and about ten inches long....about.
The filter bowl came off rather easy. It looks like an old style oil filter.
The screen, however, is behind a type of cover that has a half-inch square socket hole. I put a socket wrench in this, and it won't budge. I was pulling so hard on it that the square opening is starting to round off. It's frozen. I do not want to break the cover by wallowing out the little square hole. I don't know what I would do if that happened.
My questions are;
--Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this off without breaking it? Just keep spraying liquid wrench?
--What would be the consequences if I never change this screen? If I just change the filter, would that be enough?
Thanks in advance.
