404 head swap?

A friend called needing a head for a 404 (4040) non turbo engine. I have a head here off a 4430 (404 with turbo) that I bought with some other parts at a sale. Would this work on his non turbo engine? Thanks Tom

If one were to put a Turbo head on an engine with non-Turbo pistons I almost guarantee the valves will hit the piston. Valve protrusion on the Turbo head is different from non-Turbo heads, I don’t have the specs handy, but I can look them up, that’s why Turbo pistons have valve reliefs.

If one were in a pinch you could rework the Turbo head to non-Turbo specs and it should work fine, only question then would be whether it was a pencil or KDEL injector head if it were say a 4230 engine.

Non-turbo 404/466 have valve recession of .036-.050” for intake and .044-.058” for exhaust.
Turbo 404/466 have valve protrusion.024-.038” for both valves, so maybe they won’t hit, but they’ll be uncomfortably close to the pistons.

And then there’s different head gaskets to top it off too.

You would need to shave the pistons.030, and fly cut valve reliefs into them at about .040..I did this to a 4230 back in the 70's, it ran very good, pulled the 6 row planter for years..

Non-turbo pistons will hit valves on turbo head.
Not a compression problem.

Got it. We switched a head on the 4240 years back, and I knew there was reason the two (turbo head on on turbo engine) didn't play well together...

yes there were 2 different injectors, the early ones kinda "Y" up at the top, and have a different threat where they screw into the head as well as a different end on the lines they will not interchange with out a little thought...

There is no benefit to using a 4430 head on a 4230 other than using some thing hat you have,, there is how ever a lot of improvement using a 4450/55 head,,but the valve clearance is still in the picture..the pistons will not interchange because of the wrist pin size, you would need to change the rods too...
