Need new packing for pony fuel shutoff valve

My pony manual shutoff (AF2153R) leaks around the shaft when it's partially open. It appears to need a new packing gland. But the parts manual does not show any "user-serviceable parts inside" ;)

Is there a commonly available part (rubber washer?) that will work effectively to keep the gas where it belongs?
thanks
Charles

Thanks, I'll see if any of them even know what it is ;)

I'm wondering if it is possible to use Teflon pipe thread tape, wound into a string? I assume the graphite is to make the string slippery to prevent binding on the valve stem, and PTFE is certainly a low-friction material...

Charles,

While your at the hardware store (Lowes or Home Depot) just pick up a new valve. I ordered one of these from STP. Thought I had an extra, turns out I have two. LOL

I re-packed the shut-off stem on my tractor a few weeks ago - used a white Teflon faucet stem packing from the local good hardware store. It worked real good, but I wished at the time that it was a smaller diameter. I would try the twisted Teflon tape, especially on the little start-up tank on your tractor - the biggest deal to me is draining the tank so it can be worked on. I know that you should be able to back the packing nut off with the fuel shut off, but it has never worked good for me, ha.

Let us know how it worked if you try the twisted Teflon.

The Teflon string is a success! I twisted about a foot of cheap (thin) pipe sealing tape into a long string, then wrapped it around the shaft of the valve until it looked "about thick enough" :) and about 5/16" wide, then tightened the packing nut over it. No leaks when opening the valve the usual 2-3 turns.

It may not wear as well as an OEM packing, but for as little as I use the 70D it will do just fine... it was free too ;)

Thank you for the follow-up.

I'm gonna remember that trick for the next time. I notice that some fuel shut-offs seem to never need repacking, and others need it often.
