JD 50 shifting

My 50 is hard to get out of gear. I have to partially engage clutch to get things turning. Doesn't usually bother me but I was backed up against the baler and couldn't get it out of gear..Had to turn off the engine. Is this just the nature of the beast or do I need to adjust something?

I honestly don't know the most about the jd transmissions in these but I do know that there's little dimples in the shifter that get worn out which jam gears...im not sure if this could also make it hard to get out of a gear...im sure someone else has had this same problem. But other than that I'm so help sorry. Although I am curious to see what's causing it.

I put new springs, bolts, discs, nuts and brake on it. Brake stops pulley fine. Can't remember how I adjusted it. Guess I better dig out the manual.
Thank you!

You can sort of set that with the engine shut off stand by the belt pulley and as you try and turn it while moving the clutch handle you should feel a spot in the middle where the pulley turns freely. Then back the brake gets it tight and then forward you will feel it get tight again as where the linings start to grab. You pulley brake may be too tight not letting enough free travel between in and out. There can also be a spot with the brake set too loose where as the back clutch facing will begin to pinch and the pulley will start turning stronger the hard you pull back on the lever while running. You should be able to find the sweet spot in the middle.

Yes, the clutch brake should ONLY be adjusted close enough to the drum to stop the clutch drum when the lever is completely back..

Most clutch brakes were worn out and scared the drum and you seldom see one with any brake material left..mostly from the operator using the clutch brake to stop the tractor AND it also being set too close..

Ours were always set pretty loose...Dad would shift those "B"s like they had automatic transmissions..! Had to, when on the AC 60 combine or JD baler, ya had to be able to slip gears or not make any time at all..

I never heard gears clash...

Has it always been hard to get out of gear? What year is it? When looking at the Parts Catalog, it can be seen that the transmission received some updates over the years it was in production. If yours is an early one, you might consider trying to update using parts from a later one. Not certain that would solve your problem, but it might if adjusting the pulley brake doesn't help the problem. Mine is a 1955 and has had no problems with transmission or shifting.

When I bought it the clutch was shot so I don't know how it was before. Will play with the brake when I have some time.
