Another 2240 dipstick question

Also see below. The manual says that it screws in. So before I tackle trying to remove it, does it pull straight out or are there still threads?

I wonder if you have the correct manual for the right year ?

Earlier ones did have a screw on cap with a stick on it in that area.

Yours sure looks like the push in plastic ones the guys showed in the other post.

Tom if your tractor is close by could you pull yours and see if there is a ledge in that hole or if it is straight down thru.
If it does have a ledge maybe it won't fall in while he tries to dig it out.

SN 332649 and manual 0-349999. It's definitely read in there so probably just pull straight out.

FERD I guess we are not clear enough!!!! YOUR dipstick, BY THE picture, is the plastic type that slides down into the STEEL part your looking at. I do not care what your manual says. It is wrong for your tractor. The dipsticks can be changed you just have to change the bottom part that you show in your picture.

I would bet that yours came from the factory with the plastic dipstick. JD did not switch everything at the serial number breaks on the 40 series utility tractors. They switched when the old parts ran out. I had a JD 2640 that was a 345000 serial number. It was a nightmare on getting parts for it. Half where the early series and the other half was the later series parts.

The screw in type are completely different. They do not look anything alike. The screw on type have a nipple sticking up from the housing with external threads that the dipstick screws over like cap. The plastic type have the tapered internal hole your shows.

I looked on a JD 2440 today. If you drain the hydraulic oil and remove the sump/suction screen you can see the bottom of the dipstick. You can reach in and push it up out of the transmission. Just take a curved pry bar.
