2240 hydraulic dipstick

Just bought a 2240 and I've been looking for the hydraulic dipstick. I just received all my manuals in looking at it there should be a dipstick as in the photos. It's hard to tell by the picture in the owners manual but this seems to be the right location however it's no dipstick. Whatever it is it doesn't want to turn and I don't want to break something. Can you anyone tell me what this is or am I just looking in the wrong location?

You are at the right place. You appear to have the remains of it there. The top is red plastic and about 1 1/2 inches high. The dipstick might still be there so be careful that it does not fall down into trans. I have a 2040 here that Dad bought new. A 2240 is a nice utility tractor. Tom

The metal piece is the insert NOT the dipstick!!! Your trying to get the wrong thing out. Your dipstick is either broken or gone. It looks like there maybe a little of it sticking out the top of the insert. #4 Is the dipstick and seal ring.

IF your unlucky and it is broke off you can usually get it out by draining all the hydraulic oil and removing the sump screen #15. You can usually see it/remove it through the screen hole.

Hint when removing the sump screen plug #13, smack it hard, flat on the face, with a hammer BEFORE trying to get it loose. That will knock the packing washer enough to make it come loose easier.

Thanks for the help. I would've never in the world guessed the dipstick had a plastic handle. I see red plastic in there so maybe with some luck I can get it out.

I wonder if there is enough plastic left to screw say a drywall or deck screw into it to get something to pull on ? Those type screws seem to start into things with very little effort.

My 1st thought is screw installed in dipstick would swell it even tighter in the hole but I could be wrong.

By the parts book pic below the suction screen looks close to that area. So if it does happen to go all the way in I wonder if it can be retrieved from the suction screen opening after the screen is removed ?
Or may be possible to see the bottom of the dipstick from that screen opening and push it up out ?

According to the manual, it looks like the dipstick screws in. Are there threads or does it just pull out? Like to know before I tackle anything with it.
