I found hens teeth! "Big 6" cultivator

I never figured I'd find one. I don't think they're rare or even sought after, but I really have wanted one since I saw it in an old sales brochure. See the hinge to fold the out gang forward for transport? Bought it on a online sale and have yet to go get it. I bet my 60 won't push it, I think I'm gonna have to find a 620 or 720.

Yes, nice find. There used to be some around- neighbor had one he had taken the side extentions off of and used as a 4 row.

I think your 60 would handle it if it was set for 30 in rows- in that case, it really doesn't have many more shovels than a 4 row wide.

I agree, this one has two fewer shovels than a 4 row wide cultivator, 19 instead of 21. A 60 should pull is about as well as a 4 row wide unit.

I've never seen disc hillers installed to pull ground away from the row before, what is the reason for that? We angled disc hillers in the opposite direction to throw ground into the row, and only used them on the last pass through tall corn.

Disk hillers set to pull the soil away from the row do a better job than crop shields of controlling soil flow in small corn so you can run faster. I ran a 6 row unit on my 520 with no problems, your 60 should handle it fine.

I think the thought is to cut away from the row with the disk and throw it back with the sweep. Buffalo no till cultivators are set the same way.

I used my 60 to cultivate 6r22 with an old 400 cultivator I modified. I put a single front wheel on for that. The 60 did ok in the bottom, but it really struggled on the Hill. Lack of power and it wanted to slide. I had the rears our 88”

BTO I worked for planted corn in 4-38" rows, beans in 6-30's. Had a home-made #690 planter, made from two
#490's. Not sure what the cultivator was, but was cultivating 6-30's, with a 520. All his ground was
really flat, level, no hills.

I rotary hoed lots of beans for him, break crust so beans could break thru, his hoe was a 4 section
Deere if I remember correctly, but was wider sections to cover all 6 rows. Was a load for his #60 in 4th
gear but I think it might have pulled it in 5th but wouldn't have been able to turn on endrows in 5th
without slipping the clutch a LOT. But I suspect a #60 would push that 6-row cultivator if a 520 could.

My uncle had a wide "quik-tatch" like that on a two row bean puller on a 2510 with wide front. I assumed it was so you could use a wide front end tractor. But now I'm wondering if the wide quik-tatch was for the stability needed for a 6 row cultivator?

We pulled beans with two 2510's. One narrow front, one wide. Not much comparison. The wide front ran over less beans, and worked much better when things got sticky.

Coonie,

You think your neighbor still has that cultivator? Haven't been to Oconomowoc in awhile... I used to spray over near Wales and Dousman. The Ramstack brothers.

I have a neighbor that has a couple of these setting in the trees. I might be able to help someone save them.

Pitalplace,

Wow, I really appreciate the offer, but North Platte, NE is a 10 hour, 650 mile hump. I would absolutely LOVE to save some, but how would I get them home?
