crank end play

I recently picked up a 41 B that needs a clutch among many other things. After removing the clutch I noticed the crank has what seems to me to be an excessive amount of left to right movement. Probably about 3/16 of an inch, maybe more. Can anyone tell me how much should be there if any, or what has worn out? Thanks I really appreciate any help.

End play is adjusted by loosening the flywheel bolts, and moving the flywheel toward the block, to achieve the correct amount of play. .005-.010" sounds correct, but somebody else might tell us for sure. Your manual would show the correct amount.

Actually I was hoping it was that simple, but honestly I feared the worst. I will track down those numbers in my books and try that. Thanks for the info.

I've always adjusted crank end play the shop manual way, SM-2004.

Remove the flywheel cover and set up a dial indicator against the back side of the flywheel.
Engage the clutch and then move the clutch lever back and forth WITHOUT disengaging the clutch.
This will move the crank from side to side and tell you the end play. Adjust the flywheel in or out
to get .005 to .010 inch on the dial indicator. Tighten flywheel bolts to 275 lbs.

Unless the endplay was recently maladjusted, 3/16" movement means the thrust flange on the main bearing is worn down to ragged tin foil thickness or less and the main brg needs to be replaced.

Rich,
Thanks for the correction. I cut and pasted my reply from an early post I made to a guy who was working on a 60 and the torque # slipped by me.
