John Deere A w/o Serial Number

When I purchased my A model, I was told it was a 1950 year model. After spending some time working on it and becoming familiar with it, I went to a antique tractor pull today and saw several 1950 model A's (determined by serial number). The mounting of the distributor is different from mine, as is the gear box without a high/low range. Mine is not a 1950 year model. Wondering if there are some specific things to look for that would help determine if it is a 47, 48, or 49?

Thanks

Take a look at the table below.

Note the serial number for 1947 starts with 578516.

Note the serial number for 1949 ends with 620843.

Take a look at the information below from the JOHN DEERE TRACTOR DATA BOOK in the [b:654c4848f0]Comments[/b:654c4848f0] on page 49.

Note the serial number in 1950 for the single-stick transmission is 648000.

If your tractor has an overdrive shifter handle, then it could possibly be an early 1950 year model.

If your tractor has a ?pan? seat, then it is definitely a 1947 year model; otherwise a 1947-1950.

Hope this helps.

The first gas models came out in late 1947 and going by 2cyl club serial list 3349 were made in 47. first single lever shiftier came at 584000 that was late 49 but was called as a 1950 by Deere i have one that i got from the first owner ,it has the round axle housing and came that way new. as to the single wheel on the front that don,t mean much as it could have been put on later as to the dist, mounting some guys put PRO Pane dist, on and they have 90 degree gear set up

First single shift lever was 648000, not 584000. Square axles started somewhere around 657(?)000. There were quite a few round axle single shift tractors, we have one too, been in the family since new.
