JD 750 / 850

Tell me about the John Deere 750's and 850's.

Also what about the 755, 770, 855, and 870.

What are the proc and cons of each model. The good, the bad, and the inbetweens.

Which one would you buy and why?

Im just looking for a bigger rig to mow my lawn. No desire for a loader as I have loader tractors, not looking for a snow plow tractor either. Just to mow my lawn and maybe put a rototiller on it some day.

Thanks

Have a 750 bought brand new. 4x4 is a must for me as we have hills. You can't believe how much more this tractor can do when in 4x4 mode.
Biggest differences in those are if you can live with a gear drive lawn mower or not ? Hydro's are FAR and AWAY better for mowing and maybe even tilling ?
I also had a 755. It was a good machine but no where near as heavy duty as the 750. The engine in the 750 IIRC is a larger heavier built one that runs slower and quieter than the 755. The 755 had turf tires and was fine for mowing but worthless for snow removal ! I did like the suspension seat on the 755 too. I could really mow fast with the 755. I have lots of items to mow around.
The 755 series were powder coat painted too and it all flakes off. Most should be repainted by now.

I have had an 850 for 19 years now, it is a great little tractor. Early models have a single stage clutch, later models were two stage. I use it a lot with a 5' shredder, it would make a fine lawnmower with turf tires. For using a rototiller, a hydro would be a better choice, but it has a pretty slow first gear, would probably do a good job.

For lawn mowing, a hydro transmission is a "must" as far as I'm concerned. Of those you list only the "55" series has hydro transmission.

Wife mows with a 4100 HST with a 60 in deck. Loves it. Very maneuverable. In pricing the 750/850 class of tractors vs the 4100 there is not much difference in price around here. After driving a 750 and the 4100 I find the 750 to be quite a bit taller and not near as comfortable as the 4100 for a mowing job. It had a narrow stance and seemed a bit tippy due to a higher center of gravity. Drive one first before buying. My 2 pesos...

Maybe open up the aperture a bit on your search?

We’ve had a 750 for about 10 years now, 4 wheel drive with a loader and #7 backhoe attachment. Very handy, gets in places our big loaders won’t fit. If it quit tomorrow I’d replace with something new, not sure what brand, but it would be replaced.

I’ve run a 60” finishing mower, 4’ brush hog, and a 4’ Rototiller. It works fine on any piece of equipment, but the lack of a live PTO on the 750 really makes it more challenging, something the later 850’s and the 755/855’s don’t have to deal with, not sure on the 70 series, my only experience is with a neighbors 1070.

For mowing it’s ok as long as you’re mowing a large open area, for in tight it’s not the best with non-live pto. That’s why we have a zero-turn mower.

For rototilling it’s always worked fine, it makes the poor thing work for it, I find the trans has low enough gears to do a good job, I was killing weeds in between rows of plastic mulch.

Just curious, what do you mow your lawn with now?

Mike

You must be running a 3 pt mounted finish mower ? The factory belly mower would be live on a 750 as they run off the front of the engine crankshaft and have an electric clutch.
